FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - A memorial service for Governor Martha Layne Collins was held Sunday at the Old Kentucky State Capitol.

She was Kentucky’s first and only woman to hold the highest state office.

“Well, you can’t give up, that was Governor Collins. ‘Don’t give up, don’t back down and always be ready for the fight,’” Former Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes said.

Loved ones, colleagues, former and current Kentucky leaders join together, including Governor Andy Beshear, former Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes and Collins’ Secretary of the Cabinet Larry Hayes.

“She was one of the most fascinating people. And wherever we went, people knew who the governor of Kentucky was,” Hayes said.
