WASHINGTON, D.C. (WABI) - There is some optimism in Washington that the prolonged government shutdown could end soon.

Lawmakers worked throughout the weekend to try and iron out a deal that would end the shutdown that is now on day 41.

Maine’s Angus King joined Republicans in a 60-40 test vote in the Senate that is aimed at passing a compromise legislation to reopen the federal government without a guaranteed extension of health care subsidies.

King says Republicans have agreed in principle to hold a later vote on extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits that expires on January 1.
