Why the town’s council is putting out a call for bids to replace a name that’s recognized in three languages.
During Melanie Epp’s youth, Duck Lake’s Front Street was a prime hangout spot.
“We’d all park our cars on Front Street, and we’d play music,” she recalled.
The strip containing a gas station, pool hall and town office was the place to be, Epp said. But recently, Epp, who is Métis, said her feelings about the street she has long viewed as a symbol of her historic home have changed.
During a recent town council meeting, after covering some routine agenda items, Mayor Jason Anderson announced that Duck Lake would be putting its name up for corporate bidders in a move he describes as “radical” but necessary to revitalize the town after decades of decline.
