Keir Starmer has rejected Donald Trump’s claim that the BBC is “corrupt” after two of its senior executives quit over a bias row.
Downing Street insisted the broadcaster plays “a vital role in an age of disinformation”.
Trump hit out at the corporation following the resignations of director general Tim Davie and Deborah Turness , the chief executive of BBC News.
That came after current affairs programme Panorama was accused of doctoring a speech Trump made to his supporters before the Capitol riots on January 6, 2020.
Samir Shah, the BBC’s chairman, is expected to issue an apology on Monday.
