DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) - Monday marks 250 years since the founding of the United States Marine Corps.
It was founded on November 10, 1775.
On this day, John Adams drafted a resolution to create what was at the time called “The Continental Marines.”
Since then, thousands of marines have put their lives on the line to keep America safe.
There are currently more than 200,000 active duty and reserve marines serving in the United States.
Here in Iowa, there will be a cake cutting ceremony to celebrate the anniversary - a tradition going back to 1921.
The event is free to attend and open to the public. It begins at 11 a.m. at the Iowa State Capitol Building.
