One year after a measles outbreak sparked in Canada, the country has lost its measles elimination status — a designation it has held since 1998.

The Public Health Agency of Canada was notified Monday by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) that the country no longer holds the designation.

In a statement, PHAC said it is collaborating with the PAHO and working with the federal, provincial, territorial and community partners to implement co-ordinated actions. These include focusing on “improving vaccination coverage, strengthening data sharing, enabling better overall surveillance efforts, and providing evidence-based guidance,” the statement said.
