The Pan American Health Organization has revoked Canada’s measles elimination status, a claim it has held since 1998. This comes as a result of ongoing transmission of the same strain of measles for over a year.
Canada’s outbreak began in New Brunswick in October of last year and has infected over 5,000 people in Canada so far in 2025. Two deaths have been reported as a result of measles, one in Ontario and one in Alberta, both as a result of congenital conditions in babies who were born pre-term.
Alberta has had a total of 1,944 cases so far this year, making it the second most in Canada behind Ontario and first per-capita.
The Canada-wide outbreak peaked at the end of April but has continued to linger throughout the rest of the year.
