WASHINGTON — Eight senators in the Democratic caucus broke from their party ranks on Sunday to join Republicans by providing crucial votes to allow the Senate to move forward on compromise legislation that would reopen the government.

The group included a number of former governors and two Senators who are retiring next year.

None of the eight senators will be running for reelection in 2026, with the earliest set to face voters again in 2028.

Their decision Sunday night was labeled a “betrayal" and “pathetic” by some of the most prominent voices in the Democratic Party. While Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson praised them Monday, saying they “decided to put principle over their personal politics.”
