The New York Giants officially have a coaching vacancy after firing Brian Daboll on Monday.

Is there any chance the Giants would actually hire Bill Belichick to replace him?

Belichick famously won two Super Bowls with New York in 1986 and 1990 as a defensive coordinator under legendary coach Bill Parcells. Belichick left the Giants in 1991 to coach the Cleveland Browns, but he didn't find real success as a head coach until taking the New England Patriots job in 2000. The rest, as they say, is history.

However, Belichick's tenure in New England didn't end well after quarterback Tom Brady's departure and a brief 2021 pop in success with then-rookie Mac Jones. Belichick left the Patriots after the 2023 season and spent the 2024 season in media after not getting the vacant Atlanta Falcons job.

Belichick's college tenure as head coach of North Carolina this season hasn't gone well, leading to some speculation that he could join the NFL ranks once more. Could the Giants give him his triumphant return?

Well, probably not. Belichick will be 74 next April and would face plenty of quality candidates jockeying against him for any coaching vacancy. Plus, his longtime Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is with New England right now under coach Mike Vrabel.

It's not likely McDaniels would leave such a great job in New England to join Belichick elsewhere, especially since he's coaching an MVP candidate in Patriots quarterback Drake Maye. Not having McDaniels as his offensive coordinator would make Belichick even less appealing as a 2026 NFL head coach.

Belichick's post-Brady struggles only got worse once McDaniels left for his brief stint with the Las Vegas Raiders. His presumed desire to run an entire franchise's operations in coaching and personnel acquisition will probably scare teams off, as would the question of if a 74-year-old Belichick could adapt to an ever-changing NFL.

As of now, consider Belichick an extreme long shot to get the Giants gig. It just doesn't make much sense.
