Brian Daboll has been fired as the head coach of the New York Giants after a disappointing start to the 2025 NFL season. Daboll’s tenure with the Giants spanned three and a half seasons, during which he compiled a record of 20 wins, 40 losses, and one tie. He started strong in 2022, winning NFL Coach of the Year and leading the Giants to a 9-7-1 record and a playoff berth, but the team’s performance steadily declined after that. Last season, the Giants finished 3-14, and this year they have struggled to close out games, culminating in a 2-8 start, after which Daboll was let go following a narrow 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears, in which the team blew a double-digit lead late in the fourth quarter.

Another reason for the firing, some believe, is that the NFL fined Brian Daboll $100,000 for violating concussion protocol during Week 6 against the Philadelphia Eagles, and the New York Giants as a team were hit with a $200,000 fine for the same violation. Rookie running back Cam Skattebo was also fined $15,000 for conduct detrimental to the league related to this incident, making it a costly week for the Giants in league penalties. Additionally, Giants safety Dane Belton was fined $7,201 for an unnecessary roughness penalty incurred in Week 9 during their loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

The concussion protocol fines were tied to the way the Giants handled their rookie quarterback, Jaxson Dart, after a hit that appeared to affect his ability to play safely. While the medical staff was found to have followed procedures, the league deemed Daboll and Skattebo’s actions regarding Dart’s return to the field violations. These fines highlight ongoing disciplinary issues that have affected the Giants this season, along with their on-field struggles.

Following Daboll’s dismissal, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka has been named the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The Giants hope Kafka can provide a fresh voice and stabilize a team that possesses some impressive young talent for the future.

Looking ahead, the Giants have reason to be optimistic despite the tumultuous season. The team boasts a very talented defensive line featuring NFL sack leader Brian Burns, who has excelled individually even as the team struggled. The offensive side has intriguing young pieces, including quarterback Jaxson Dart and rookie running back Cam Skattebo, who has shown flashes of promise before being sidelined for the year due to injury. These building blocks could help the Giants return to competitiveness down the road if they continue to develop under new leadership.

While Daboll’s time with the Giants will be remembered for early promise overshadowed by missed opportunities and late-game collapses, the team remains hopeful that this coaching change marks the start of a new chapter with sustained success on the horizon.
