Visa and Mastercard announced a settlement deal Monday in a decades-long legal battle over merchant fees on card transactions.
The deal would lower the merchant fees associated with card transactions on the retail end, and also eliminate a rule that if a retailer accepts one kind of Visa card, they must accept all Visas.
If the settlement is approved by a judge, it would mean businesses could choose to turn away customers hoping to pay with rewards cards, which often come with higher merchant fees.
Some examples of popular rewards cards include the Chase Freedom Unlimited and Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. Under the new rules, retailers could choose to reject payments from those cards in favor of cash or cards with lower merchant fees.
