More than 1,000 positive drug tests involving cocaine have been recorded by police since the narcotic was included in Queensland's roadside testing regime.

Police say they have caught drivers with multiple substances in their system, as they ramp up testing efforts.

They have notched up more than 70,000 tests in the past year.

The figures come as police reveal that drug driving has overtaken drink driving in fatal accidents across the state.

Cocaine was not part of roadside tests in Queensland, until the state government widened the program in July 2023 to include the drug.

In the two years between July 2023 and June this year, police say they detected cocaine in drivers on 1,473 occasions.

That equates to about 14 instances every week on average.
