Mike Norvell may now occupy the hottest seat in America at Florida State, and he didn't get any relief from the pressure he's facing after the Seminoles' 24-10 loss at Clemson on Saturday. Still, despite rumors about his job security beyond the 2025 season, Norvell believes FSU can and will win championships again in the near future under his guidance.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Norvell reiterated that he embraces the championship expectations at Florida State.
"I've got an elite level of confidence for what's ahead for this program," Norvell said, per Noles247. "I believe in it. I believe in the guys. When I look at our roster, I see the guys. As I mentioned earlier, we've won championships here. We've done that."
Norvell is referring to the Seminoles' run to an ACC title in 2023, in which they finished the regular season undefeated but were controversially left out of the College Football Playoff after a season-ending injury to quarterback Jordan Travis. In the two seasons since, Norvell is just 6-15 with a pair of ACC wins.
Still, he thinks the program can get back to championship-caliber under his watch.
"The job I'm going to show up and do is I'm going to pour everything I have in this team with a championship expectation for us to grow and be better," Norvell said. "Why I can say that? I've actually won a championship. I've done that. We're going to do it again. We're going to do it here.
"That might piss people off. So be it. They'll be celebrating when we are hoisting a trophy. It will be the belief I see from our players, the belief I see from our coaches, the talent that I know our players have and the guys that are coming to be a part of this. I've got elite level confidence for what's ahead of us. I know not everybody wants to hear that. I don't care. I know what it's going to be. And I'm grateful for the opportunity that I have. I also understand that it has not been good enough. And the results, they matter. But we're going to take that step and we're going to get the job done."
Those are certainly confident words from Norvell, whose team began the year 3-0 with an upset win over Alabama but proceeded to lose its first four ACC games. The Seminoles now sit at 1-5 in ACC play after Saturday's loss.
It seemed Norvell was heading for a midseason firing after a road loss to Stanford, but he got something of a vote of confidence from athletics director Michael Alford. While Alford hasn't confirmed Norvell will return in 2026, he has implied a decision on the embattled coach's future will come at the end of the season.
Whether Norvell gets the chance to prove himself right remains to be seen, and with remaining games against Virginia Tech, NC State and Florida, FSU will need to win two of them to avoid missing a bowl for the second year in a row.
The only question is: Would that be enough to save Norvell's job ahead of what will be an extremely crowded coaching carousel cycle?
