A consumer protection organization is asking state regulators to reject Indiana Michigan Power's attempt to quickly power up energy production to meet new data centers' needs.

Citizens Action Coalition contends that allowing I&M to buy existing power plants and build others to increase its output would result in "a more than $7 billion blank check," something the nonprofit describes as a conservative cost estimate.

The coalition filed its objection, based on what it described as expert testimony, Friday with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. The commission is now reviewing I&M's request.
