OTTAWA - Yves Engler, a Montreal activist, is officially applying to enter the New Democratic Party (NDP) leadership race. This move comes months after he initially announced his intention to run. Engler is currently undergoing the vetting process to ensure he can participate in the first formal leadership debate, which is set for November 27 in Montreal.
Engler expressed his desire to gather additional support for his candidacy before facing a review from the vetting committee. He has criticized this committee, claiming it has a history of "anti-democratic" behavior.
So far, Engler's campaign has raised $90,000, which he states is sufficient to cover the initial $25,000 deposit required to enter the race, as well as a second payment due this Friday. However, the NDP's chief electoral officer has indicated that donations cannot be accepted until a candidate has formally entered the race. Additionally, all contributions must be processed through the party.
If Engler's application is approved, he will become the sixth candidate in the leadership race.
