Deadly fire breaks out at Gordon Working Men's Club in Morecambe

Terrified customers of a working men's club became trapped inside when a deadly fire sparked when a gas canister was ignited by a regular, an inquest has heard.

Philip Antony Townsend, 70, and John James McCartney, 60, both died from smoke inhalation after they were unable to escape from the Gordon Working Men's Club in Morecambe on October 9, 2019.

The premises was in a building owned by Gillnell; a London-based property investment company controlled by Blake and Petronella Weltman, which also owns property in Burnley, Nelson and Barrow-in-Furness, LancsLive reports.
