Gov. Gen. Mary Simon will not attend the Remembrance Day ceremony in downtown Ottawa this year, as she is recovering in hospital from an unnamed illness. Article content

On Monday afternoon, Simon’s office said that she will miss the annual ceremony “due to a respiratory virus,” but that she is “doing well.” Article content Article content

“We appreciate your understanding and respect for her privacy at this time,” her office said in a press release announcing her absence.

Richard Wagner, the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, will attend the ceremony in Simon’s place.

Simon was also unable to attend a ceremony on Nov. 8, marking Indigenous Veteran’s Day. Article content
