Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul pushed back on New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s plan to make city buses free.

During a news conference at the SOMOS political retreat in Puerto Rico over the weekend, Hochul appeared to cast doubt on if she would support Mamdani making buses in New York City free. SOMOS is an annual conference where New York and Puerto Rican leaders meet to discuss public policy and issues facing the Latino community.

“We’re spending a lot of money, so I cannot set forth a plan right now that takes money out of a system that relies on the fares of the buses and the subways,” Hochul said, according to The New York Post.

She added that it was possible to make busing more affordable in the city.
