Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is facing the wrath of his own party after eight members of the Democratic caucus broke ranks to vote with Republicans on ending the government shutdown.
The Senate on Sunday voted 60-40 to advance a compromise bill that would fund the federal government through Jan. 30, 2026, and includes three longer-term appropriations bills to fund food aid, veterans programs and agricultural programs for the full fiscal year.
Notably, the deal did not secure an extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies that will expire on Dec. 31— a key Democratic demand that has dominated negotiations for nearly six weeks. Instead, the package guarantees a vote on the issue in mid-December.
