Twenty homes were evacuated Monday morning after a contractor struck an underground propane tank in Passaic County, causing it to leak, West Milford Mayor Michele Dale said in a social media post.
The incident happened near 290 High Crest Drive causing nearby residents to be relocated to the High Crest Clubhouse, Dale said.
High Crest Drive and Upper High Crest Drive were expected to be closed for several hours, according to police.
The Passaic County hazmat team and West Milford Fire Department responded to the scene and are monitoring air quality, borough officials said.
There is no immediate concern or threat to a nearby school, Dale said.
