LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

Several Vietnam War veterans were honored Monday morning at a pinning ceremony led by U.S. Rep. Morgan McGarvey, part of the 50th anniversary commemoration of the war and an effort to recognize service members who did not receive a warm welcome when they returned home.

"Fifty-eight years since I came home and took a good almost 40 years before I even said I was ever in Vietnam — What for? To get scorned and get looked down on? No," said Michael Gullo, who served in the U.S. Army.

For many like Gullo, the memories remain painful.

"They didn't get respect or appreciation or recognition when they came home," McGarvey said. "That's a wrong that we're trying to right. And ceremonies like today are a real step in that direction."
