KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — As confusion continues over the return of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, local food banks say they’re stepping up to help families who are still waiting for assistance.
Since the start of the federal shutdown on November 1, Wesley House Community Center in Knoxville reports making more than 2,600 community impacts, meaning families and individuals who have turned to the nonprofit for food and other essentials.
For visitors like Trina Mutts, the delay in SNAP benefits has made daily life difficult.
“I just try to stretch it out, just try to make way with the income I have. But it’s been pretty difficult,” Mutts said. “I try to hit a food bank once a day and find someone that’s giving something out.”
