President Donald Trump said Monday he backs a deal to end the shutdown that is now winding its way through the Senate.
“I’ll abide by the deal. The deal is very good," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
"We're going to be opening up our country very quickly," Trump said.
The agreement, which would still need to be approved by the House, includes provisions that would reverse the mass firings of federal workers and guarantee they are paid once the shutdown is over.
After weeks of negotiations, a group of moderate Senate Democrats agreed to reopen the government without a guaranteed extension of health care subsidies, angering many in their caucus who have demanded that Republicans negotiate with them on the Affordable Care Act tax credits that expire Jan. 1.
