NEWPORT, Ky. —

Newport will celebrate the start of the holiday season by illuminating the Purple People Bridge Friday night.

Newport is taking control of the holiday display for the first time since assuming ownership of the bridge from Southbank Partners in August.

Thousands of colorful LED lights and festive displays will stretch across the bridge, which connects Newport and Cincinnati.

The free event Friday will include the ceremonial lighting of the bridge, a Wish Tree in partnership with The Wish Tree Program and remarks from Newport mayor Tom Guidugli Jr.
