FORT WORTH, Texas — I'll never forget covering the case of Chante Mallard. It was a story that horrified the nation — not just because of the accident, but because of what happened afterward.
“I think that the case of Chante Mallard became such a huge story because of the callous nature of how it went down," said former prosecutor Miles Brisette.
It was October 2001 when Mallard was driving home from a bar in Fort Worth and struck Gregory Biggs, a 37-year-old man. The impact sent Biggs crashing through her windshield.
“I mean the whole story boiled down to a simple tourniquet would probably have saved Mr. Biggs’s life,” Brisette said.
But Mallard didn’t call 911. Instead, she drove past a fire station and took Biggs home with him still alive and lodged in her car.
