LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Days after a UPS cargo jet crashed south of Louisville's international airport, killing at least 14 people , crews continue to monitor environmental impacts of spilled oil in nearby waterways.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said it continues to assess surface water impacted by oil spilled in the crash every day.
While drinking water remains safe, unless told otherwise by Louisville Water, more than 286,000 gallons of oil mixed with water have been recovered from Jefferson County waterways since Nov. 5, according to the EPA.
In an update Monday afternoon, Mayor Craig Greenberg credited the Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) with preventing an environmental disaster.
