A new chemical manufacturing facility will soon begin operations on Peoria’s south side.

25 News reports that Viridis Industrial Chemistry will operate along the Illinois River next to the former BioUrja facility. After nearly a year of construction and planning, the plant is nearing completion.

The Nebraska-based company specializes in producing ethyl acetate, a renewable chemical compound commonly used in manufacturing. Traditionally made using fossil fuels, Viridis will use corn-based ethanol as a greener alternative.

If the plant’s end-of-year commission goes according to plan, Viridis will begin making sales in the first quarter of 2026.
