RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -The average rent here in Reno is more than $1700 dollars a month says the Nevada State Apartment Association.

For those on a fixed income, it’s estimated they can pay up to 70% of their monthly earnings on rent.

That means they have less money for food, pay their utility bill, or medications.

When seniors reach that 70% point or are getting close to it with a rental increase, they can call Senior ResQ.

A local organization which can help defray the cost of rent.

“It’s been a god send every month,” says Reno resident Stuart Forsythe.

Forsythe’s roommate who helped with the monthly rent died unexpectedly, leaving him with a $1200 dollar bill.

He is recovering from cancer and had few if any options.
