MICHIGAN, USA — Outside the Fruitport rest area along I-96 you'll see a sign that reads "We want to hear from you!" in big, bold, blue letters. It's just one of many signs the Michigan Department of Transportation has planted throughout the state, asking people to give feedback on its proposed new rules.
According to the state's website, MDOT maintains 61 highway rest areas, 82 roadside parks, 267 carpool lots, 23 scenic turnouts, and 14 welcome centers throughout the state. The agency is proposing new rules that leaders say would improve safety and maintenance at those facilities.
Key aspects of the new rules ban stays longer than 48 hours, camping, dumping trash, and alcohol consumption. Unleashed pets are not allowed and the only pets allowed inside buildings are service animals. Fire
