Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced on Monday that he has sued a nonprofit that works to increase civic participation among Latinos, alleging that the group had orchestrated “a systematic, unlawful voter registration scheme” and calling for it to be dissolved.
Jolt Initiative condemned the lawsuit, which was filed Oct. 23, calling it “meritless” and a “scare tactic” against the group’s First Amendment activities that aim at empowering Latino voters. The attorney general’s office has also in recent years targeted other organizations aiding Latinos and migrants, such as the effort to investigate and shut down El Paso-based Annunciation House.
