Non-profit organizations and the Catholic church in Toronto are raising funds to help people in the Philippines after two typhoons ripped through the country in recent days, killing more than 200 people and displacing more than a million.
Representatives of the groups say they are encouraging financial donations because it's the fastest way to help people struggling in the aftermath of Typhoon Fung-wong, which hit Sunday, and Typhoon Kalmaegi, which hit Tuesday.
Agnes Manasan, board member of Gawad Kalinga Canada and the president of University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Toronto, said she is helping to organize on behalf of both organizations.
"We're looking at really going to the people that are needing it the most. We would like the money to get there as fast as we can,
