Ghislaine Maxwell, the close associate and convicted accomplice of late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, will ask US President Donald Trump to commute her prison sentence, according to a Democrat politician.

Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, wrote in a letter to Trump that Maxwell is working on filing a commutation application, citing an unnamed whistleblower.

Raskin said the information signals Maxwell either wants to be released from her prison sentence or is making recommendations about other federal convicts to the Justice Department.

The request comes just months after Maxwell's transfer to a minimum-security prison in Texas following a meeting with US Assistant Attorney General Todd Blanche in July.
