JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville City Council plans to consider extra funding for the nonprofit Feeding Northeast Florida to help families stay afloat during the government shutdown. Although the government took its first steps Sunday toward reopening, it could take time to happen, and even longer for SNAP funds to roll out in full.

Councilman Ron Salem and Councilman Kevin Carrico introduced a bill to allocate $200,000 to the organization due to the increased food demand.

The City of Jacksonville’s analytics department reports that around 56,000 of its families relied on SNAP benefits as of 2023.

Over the past two years, the council has allocated $200,000 to the nonprofit Feeding Northeast Florida.
