GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an attempt to overturn the landmark 2015 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, bringing relief to the LGBTQ+ community in Greenville, who feared their rights could be reexamined.

The justices rejected an appeal from Kim Davis, a former Kentucky county clerk, to overturn the 2015 ruling. Davis was sued that year for refusing to issue marriage licenses due to her opposition to same-sex marriage based on her religious beliefs.

Her appeal in the case raised concerns within the LGBTQ+ community that the nation’s highest court could overturn the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges decision.

The decision has been particularly meaningful for ECU student Ace Hendley, who was raised by two women in a same-sex marriage.
