An influencer has been fined over $834 for illegally starting a fire on K'gari, also known as Fraser Island, which is a World Heritage site. The Queensland Environment Department reported that the woman also received a warning for flying a drone to capture video footage above a camping area, where drone use is prohibited.
Campfires on K'gari are strictly banned, except in designated communal fire rings provided by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, and only when fire bans are not in effect. Senior Ranger Chad Hoult emphasized that content creators must adhere to these regulations. "Disregarding these rules poses a serious threat to K'gari's delicate environment, unique wildlife, and rich cultural heritage," he stated.
In 2020, a bushfire that lasted three months devastated approximately half of the island after a campfire was not properly extinguished. Mr. Hoult warned, "Illegal fires can quickly become bushfires that impact the island's natural and cultural values and put lives at risk. We are lucky this wasn't the case with this fire; however, we have seen illegal campfires become significant bushfires on Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) and at Teewah."
