BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The Christian Service Mission (CSM) collected 35,000 pounds of food items for SNAP recipients who have not received their November benefits due to the ongoing federal government shutdown .

The food was donated to CSM over the course of four days, between Nov. 3 and Nov. 6 during a week-long food drive .

The food drive was one part of a three-part response by the city of Birmingham to provide supplemental support for thousands of Birmingham residents who have not received their SNAP benefits in November.

Jamie Leo, Director of Operations for CSM, said the collection created more than 1,000 food boxes. Those boxes were distributed the following weekend at New Rising Star Baptist Church in Birmingham’s East Lake neighborhood.
