“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” will be performed Nov. 14-16 at Waverly-Shell Rock High School. The Tony Award-winning musical from 2004 is W-SR’s choice for this fall’s annual student production.
With a cast of nine, the show is intimate for a musical. It’s the first collaboration between new choir teacher Greta Nelson, who directs the music, and director Joe Frenna, who teaches language arts at W-SR’s Lied Center, and they wanted to start with a manageable cast size.
“So you’ll see nine phenomenal humans on that stage, and also the leaders that are helping behind the scenes,” said Nelson. “It’s been great to get our footing with a show that I think is really fun.”
Frenna agrees that the show is fun, with a lot of deep themes.
