Former prime minister Paul Keating has revealed he would have put the governor-general who sacked the Whitlam government under arrest, while the current head of state has all but ruled out a repeat of the notorious dismissal.

Mr Whitlam was fired on November 11, 1975 by then-governor-general Sir John Kerr due to a parliamentary deadlock that meant the government was rapidly running out of money to run programs and pay public servants.

Describing the saga as "destructive", Mr Keating said he told Mr Whitlam in the aftermath of the dismissal he should have gone directly to Queen Elizabeth II to have Sir John sacked.
