GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Greenville City Council discussed a no-camping ordinance on Monday aimed at preventing homeless people from living in city parks and public spaces.
There was a debate between the ordinance’s supporters and opponents on whether it would help people without shelter or if it criminalizes homelessness.
City leaders who supported the ordinance said they worked with local service providers to create the proposed rules.
Cody Carver, the Director of Greenville Together said, “We shared recommendations such as prioritizing outreach first engagement, creating safe options for storing personal belongings, and ensuring 24-7 access to restrooms, just to name a few. These recommendations are now reflected in the ordinance and that matters. ”
