A book arrived in my mailbox and I thought, “Uh oh, another book about Aspen.” I prayed whoever wrote it used historical pictures of the town I hadn’t seen dozens of times already. The cover photo did not allay my dread — a shot from the 1960s looking up Mill Street at Aspen Mountain. I set the book down and forgot about it.

A week later I was packing for a road trip and my eye caught the book. What the heck, I thought, and I threw it in my backpack. I am glad I did! Our car took me far away in miles; the book did the same in years. It created the perfect perspective to take the story in — my mind strained at the memories, the details worked my reasoning, the author’s journey in making Aspen his home warmed my heart and my imagination ran wild with what-ifs.
