I recently read an opinion column addressing the shooting of Charlie Kirk and the broader issue of political violence. While the piece raises important concerns about the dangerous erosion of civility in public discourse, it also prompts several reflections about how we frame and address this crisis as a nation.
First, the focus on high-profile actors (for instance, conservative activist Charlie Kirk) risks overshadowing the many less-visible instances of intimidation, harassment and radicalization in our communities. Political violence isn’t only a headline event — it’s also the steady drip of threats, online amplification of hate and disengagement from democratic norms. Acknowledging the full spectrum of this phenomenon strengthens our response.
