DICKINSON, N.D. (KFYR) – A 34-year-old man died in an officer-involved shooting near a Dickinson hospital Monday.
According to a report from Dickinson Police Chief Joseph Cianni, around 5 p.m. officers were called to a welfare check by loved ones of a man making suicidal comments.
Officers located the man near the west parking lot of the St. Alexius Hospital ER, the chief said. Witnesses told police the man fired a gun several times outside the ER shortly before the police arrived.
Officers established a perimeter and tried to persuade the man to drop the gun. According to the report, an officer perceived an ‘immediate lethal threat to officers’ and fired their duty weapon, striking and killing the man.
The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is taking over the investigation.
