The AFL will throw big money at Victorian and Western Australian stars in a bid to lure them to play State of Origin, with over $1 million in deals on offer for the February showpiece.

7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary has revealed players will receive a base contract of around $20,000, with a handful able to earn up to $45,000 for extra marketing work with Tourism WA.

The lucrative payments are similar to NRL players, who earn $30,000 for an Origin game.

But it’s a big upgrade when compared to the last AFL Origin match 26 years ago, when players received around $2,000 each.
