The Centre has revised the pension regulations for government employees, making it mandatory for both parents of a deceased government servant to submit annual life certificates if they wish to continue receiving the higher family pension rate of 75 percent.

According to a clarification issued by the Department of Pension & Pensioners’ Welfare, this step has been taken to ensure that pensions are disbursed correctly and at the appropriate rate. Earlier, the government had no system to verify whether both parents were alive, which occasionally resulted in overpayments.

In several cases, the 75% pension continued even after one parent had passed away, although the rule clearly stipulates that the amount should be reduced to 60% if only one parent survives.
