The mayor of an Australian council has been forced to apologise after the axe was taken to dozens of trees by mistake.
The Town of Victoria Park in Perth has been left red-faced over the green blunder which occurred during upgrades to the Elizabeth Baillie Park, which have been ongoing since March.

While 11 were approved for removal, 65 trees were brought down during the course of construction “that were not planned to be”.
That includes 19 that were culled because they were in poor condition and for safety reasons.
But the majority — 46 — were slashed without council approval.
Mayor Karen Vernon said the council takes “full responsibility” for the mistake and “I sincerely apologise to our community.”
