The northern lights are expected to appear over the entirety of Michigan Tuesday night, Nov. 11 — and in states to the south, according to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) forecast, but cloudy skies, rain and snow will make viewing a challenge.

The view line on SWPC's dashboard map shows people in up to 21 states could see the northern lights, or aurora borealis, Tuesday night. All of Michigan may be able to see the glowing lights in the night sky to the north, NOAA says.

However, local NWS offices forecast cloudy skies and an outlook for rain and snow across much of the state Tuesday night, likely hampering any aurora visibility. Best viewing occurs in a dark, open area under clear skies, experts advise.
