Virgin Australia has announced a new system that could allow passengers to bring more carry-on luggage.

Coming into effect on February 2, economy passengers — including Velocity Red or Silver — will be allowed to bring one piece of luggage weighing up to 8kg for overhead lockers and a personal item like a backpack or purse.

Currently, economy passengers are only allowed to bring 7kg worth of luggage, which could be split across two pieces, on top of a personal item.

Business class passengers will also changes to to carry-on rules which allow up to two pieces of luggage weighing up to 14kg, however neither piece can weigh more than 8kg.

The changes will allow families travelling with the airline to bring an additional small personal item for essential baby products, such as a nappy bag,
