When writer and community advocate Juanita Mathews wanted to create a signature item that would promote her fictional tale of Rose Johnson, a young girl from Chicago’s south side who dreams of becoming a champion Irish step dancer, she landed on the idea of a sneaker. She wrote it as a film or stage treatment, but the story was never picked up.
