The United Way Perth-Huron has announced the region’s new living wage is $26.60 an hour, a marked increase from last year’s $23.05 living wage.

United Way Perth-Huron executive director Ryan Erb said making the region’s communities more livable is an ongoing effort.

“Unfortunately, shelter costs continue to be a major driver of the increase to the living wage rate locally, as are the higher costs of transportation in rural communities like ours,” he said.

A living wage demonstrates how much a worker needs to earn to make ends meet and enjoy participating modestly in the community. Expenses are gathered for three types of households for the living wage calculations, including two adults supporting two small children, a single parent with one child, and a single adult.
