Born in Tokyo, Keiko Matsui began her classical piano education at age five, developing a strong interest in jazz by her teens. After completing her education and working with a fusion group, Matsui launched her solo career with 1987’s A Drop of Water. Combining jazz and new age textures, that debut reached No. 20 on Billboard’s Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. Subsequent albums built on that foundation, often incorporating world music elements. Deep Blue, released in 2001, was the first album by a Japanese artist to claim the top spot on Billboard’s jazz album chart. Matsui’s most recent studio release is 2023’s Euphoria.
